Knitwear knit sweater manufacturers

Buyers should prioritize fiber composition based on target market needs. For premium segments, look for 100% Cashmere or Merino Wool for superior warmth and softness. For mass-market retail, Cotton-Acrylic or Nylon blends offer better durability and shape retention. Ensure the supplier specifies the yarn count (e.g., 2/26nm) and gauge (e.g., 7GG, 12GG, 14GG), as these determine the thickness and weight of the sweater.

Focus on linking and finishing. High-end knitwear should feature hand-linked seams rather than overlocked seams to ensure a flat, comfortable finish. Check for pilling resistance (Grade 3-4 or higher) and colorfastness to washing and light (ISO 105 standards). Additionally, verify that the ribbing at cuffs and hems contains high-quality elastic yarn to prevent stretching out after repeated wear.

For the US market, compliance with CPSIA (especially for children's knitwear) and FTC labeling requirements (fiber content and care instructions) is mandatory. For the EU, products must meet REACH regulations regarding AZO dyes and harmful chemicals. Sourcing from factories with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifications ensures the product is safe and environmentally friendly.

Confirm if the supplier uses computerized flat knitting machines (e.g., Shima Seiki or Stoll), which allow for complex Intarsia, Jacquard, or 3D seamless knitting. Ask for their Monthly Production Capacity to ensure they can scale with your growth. For private labels, verify their OEM/ODM capabilities, specifically their ability to provide tech packs, proto-samples, and size grading.

The primary risks include size discrepancies and weight shortages. Always provide a detailed Size Specification Chart and require a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) by third parties like SGS or Intertek. To prevent weight fraud, specify the net weight per garment in the contract. Using Made-in-China.com's Secured Trading services can help protect your payment until the quality is verified.

Negotiate based on yarn price fluctuations; since raw material costs (like wool) vary seasonally, locking in prices during the off-season can save 10-15%. Discuss MOQ flexibility—many suppliers will lower MOQs if you use stock service yarns (colors already in their warehouse) instead of custom-dyed yarns. Always clarify Incoterms (FOB vs. DDP) to avoid hidden logistics costs.

Knitwear is highly susceptible to moisture and mildew during sea freight. Insist on the use of silica gel desiccant packets in every polybag and the use of heavy-duty, moisture-proof master cartons. For high-value cashmere, consider vacuum packaging to reduce volume and shipping costs, but ensure the supplier provides instructions on how to steam the garments back to shape upon arrival.

Conduct a Factory Audit to verify the supplier's physical existence and social compliance (BSCI/SEDEX). Utilize Escrow payment methods or Letters of Credit (L/C) for large volumes. On platforms like Made-in-China.com, prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone comprehensive on-site verification to minimize the risk of fraud or sub-standard production.
