Buyers should prioritize engine displacement (measured in CCs) and horsepower (HP), typically ranging from 90HP to 300HP. For rental fleets, naturally aspirated engines are preferred for their lower maintenance costs and fuel efficiency, whereas supercharged engines cater to the luxury performance market. Additionally, verify the hull material; High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Long Fiber Reinforced Plastic (LFRP) offers superior impact resistance and durability compared to standard fiberglass.

Compliance is critical for customs clearance. Ensure the manufacturer provides CE Marking for the European market and meets USCG (U.S. Coast Guard) or EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards for emissions and safety in the United States. Furthermore, products should adhere to ISO 13590 (Small craft — Personal watercraft) which covers construction and system installation requirements.

For saltwater environments, a Closed-Loop Cooling System (CLCS) is highly recommended as it uses coolant instead of corrosive saltwater to cool the engine, significantly extending the engine's lifespan. Ensure all electrical connectors are waterproofed (IP67 or higher) and that the jet pump components are made of stainless steel or high-grade anti-corrosive alloys to prevent premature wear.

Professional sourcing should require an Off-Throttle Steering (OTS) system to assist in maneuverability during engine cut-off. Other essentials include an Electronic Brake and Reverse (EBR) system, a digitally encoded security key (DESS) to prevent theft, and reboarding ladders for user safety. For commercial use, look for programmable speed limiters to accommodate novice riders.

The main risks involve battery and fuel residue regulations. Jet Skis are often classified as Dangerous Goods (DG) due to their engines and batteries. You must ensure the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and uses UN-certified packaging. To mitigate physical damage, insist on steel-framed crates rather than simple wooden pallets to prevent crushing during sea freight.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Request a breakdown of spare parts availability (such as wear rings, impellers, and gaskets) as part of the package. Negotiate for a 1-2% spare parts allowance included in the FOB price. For large orders, aim for a staggered payment structure (e.g., 30% deposit, 70% after third-party pre-shipment inspection).

Always use Secured Trading Services provided by Made-in-China.com to ensure payment is only released upon confirmation of shipment. Conduct a factory audit or hire a third-party inspector to verify the hull integrity and engine serial numbers before the final balance is paid. This prevents the risk of receiving refurbished units instead of new ones.

Verify the HS Code (typically 8903.99) with your local customs broker to determine the exact import tariffs and luxury taxes. Be aware that some countries impose strict anti-dumping duties or specific environmental levies on two-stroke engines; therefore, sourcing four-stroke EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) models is generally safer for global trade compliance.
