Size standards vary significantly between Asian, US, and EU markets. When sourcing plus-size clothing, you must request a detailed size chart in centimeters and confirm if the patterns are based on Western Fit (larger armholes and chest) or Asian Fit. It is highly recommended to order physical samples to verify the 'True to Size' fit, as inconsistent grading between XL and 4XL is a common cause for high return rates in e-commerce.

Durability and comfort are paramount. Look for fabrics with high Spandex/Elastane content (5-10%) to provide necessary stretch and shape retention. For activewear or summer items, prioritize GSM (Grams per Square Meter) weights that ensure the fabric is non-see-through (squat-proof) while maintaining breathability. Ensure the supplier uses reinforced stitching (double-needle or flatlock) to prevent seam failure under high tension.

For textile exports, ensure the products meet OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which guarantees the absence of harmful substances like formaldehyde and azo dyes. If selling in the US, compliance with CPSIA is necessary for lead and phthalate content. For the EU market, ensure the manufacturer adheres to REACH regulations. Always ask for third-party lab test reports from agencies like SGS or Intertek.

Professional plus-size manufacturers should offer low MOQ for custom designs (typically 100-300 pieces per color). Check if they provide private labeling, custom hangtags, and specialized packaging. A strong supplier will have an in-house design team capable of 3D virtual sampling, which can significantly reduce the lead time for prototype approval.

The biggest risk is 'Size Inflation' or 'Size Deflation', where the labeled size does not match the target market's expectations. Another risk is fabric substitution, where a supplier uses a lower-grade polyester blend instead of the agreed-upon cotton-rich fabric. To mitigate this, use Trade Assurance services on Made-in-China.com and hire a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) service to verify fabric weight and dimensions before final payment.

Focus on volume-based pricing tiers. For example, negotiate a 5-10% discount if the total order exceeds 1,000 units across mixed sizes. Additionally, negotiate for shorter lead times (25-30 days) for repeat orders. Always clarify the Incoterms (FOB vs. DDP); for new buyers, DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is often safer as the supplier handles all customs clearance and local taxes.

For orders under 100kg, International Express (DHL/FedEx/UPS) is fastest but expensive. For bulk inventory, Sea Freight (LCL - Less than Container Load) is the most cost-effective, though it takes 30-45 days. If you are selling on platforms like Amazon, look for suppliers who offer FBA Prep Services, including barcoding and palletization, to streamline the logistics process.

Always conduct transactions through secure payment channels provided by reputable B2B platforms like Made-in-China.com. Avoid direct wire transfers to private bank accounts. Verify the supplier's Business License and Export Qualification. A 'Diamond' or 'Audited' supplier status on the platform indicates a higher level of financial stability and manufacturing credibility.
