Citronella candles manufacturers

Buyers should prioritize wax composition, typically choosing between 100% natural soy wax, paraffin, or blends. Soy wax is preferred for its longer burn time and eco-friendly appeal. The citronella oil concentration is critical; a concentration of 3% to 5% is standard for effective insect repellency. Additionally, ensure the use of lead-free cotton wicks to prevent soot and ensure a clean, stable flame.

For the US market, products must comply with ASTM F2417 (Standard Specification for Candle Fire Safety) and EPA regulations if marketed as a pesticide/repellent. In the EU, adherence to EN 15493 (Fire Safety), EN 15426 (Sooting Behavior), and REACH (chemical safety) is mandatory. Always verify that the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and CLP labeling for European shipments.

Request a burn test report to verify the burn hours (e.g., a 10oz candle should last 40-50 hours). Evaluate the scent throw (both cold and hot) to ensure the citronella fragrance is potent enough to repel mosquitoes in the intended usage scenarios, such as patios or campsites. Check the container integrity, ensuring that tin or glass holders are heat-resistant and do not leak during prolonged use.

Top-tier suppliers on Made-in-China.com should provide OEM/ODM services, including private labeling, custom scents (e.g., Citronella + Lemongrass), and bespoke packaging (printed tins, gift boxes). For e-commerce sellers, ensure the packaging passes a drop test (ISTA 1A or 3A) to minimize breakage during last-mile delivery.

The main risks include fragrance degradation during long-term storage and melting during transit through tropical climates. To mitigate this, specify temperature-controlled shipping or ensure the wax has a high melting point (above 50°C). Use Trade Assurance services on Made-in-China.com to protect your payment until the quality is verified by a third-party inspection (e.g., SGS or Intertek).

Focus on volume-based pricing tiers; typically, increasing an order from 500 to 2,000 units can reduce the unit cost by 15-25%. Negotiate for lower MOQs on trial scents if you are committing to a large volume of a core product. Always clarify if the quoted price is FOB (Free On Board), which is standard for sea freight, to avoid hidden logistics costs.

Candles are heavy and potentially fragile. Ensure the supplier uses double-walled corrugated outer cartons and internal dividers. For glass containers, bubble wrap or molded pulp inserts are essential. Request that pallets are shrink-wrapped and strapped to prevent shifting in the container, and avoid top-loading heavy items on top of candle shipments.

Be aware of Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD); some regions (like the US) have historically applied high duties on petroleum-based wax candles from specific countries. Sourcing vegetable-based wax candles can often bypass these specific duties. Always check the HS Code (typically 3406.00) against your local customs tariff schedule to calculate accurate import duties and taxes.
