Dry malt extract manufacturers

When evaluating DME, the most critical factors are Wort Clarity, Fermentability, and Color Consistency. High-quality DME should have a moisture content below 5% to prevent clumping and extend shelf life. You should request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch to verify the Diastatic Power, pH levels (typically 5.0-6.0), and Free Amino Nitrogen (FAN) content, which is essential for yeast health during fermentation.

DME is categorized by color and composition, such as Extra Light, Light, Amber, and Dark. For brewing, Extra Light DME provides a neutral base, while Wheat DME (usually a 60/40 barley-to-wheat ratio) is specific for Hefeweizens. In the food industry, DME is used for enzymatic activity in baking or as a natural sweetener and browning agent in confectionery. Ensure the supplier specifies the Lovibond or EBC color rating to match your specific recipe requirements.

As a food-grade ingredient, the supplier must hold HACCP or ISO 22000 Food Safety Management certifications. For entry into major markets like the US or EU, FDA Registration or EFSA compliance is necessary. Additionally, if your target market has specific dietary requirements, verify Kosher, Halal, or Organic (USDA/EU) certifications to ensure the product meets consumer expectations and legal standards.

Most professional manufacturers on Made-in-China.com can customize the malt blend ratio or adjust the evaporation process to achieve specific sugar profiles (Maltose vs. Dextrin levels). However, customization usually requires a higher Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ), often starting at 5 to 10 metric tons. For smaller buyers, it is more economically feasible to select from the supplier's standard catalog of spray-dried powders.

The biggest risk is moisture ingress and caking. DME is highly hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air rapidly. Ensure the supplier uses multi-layer moisture-proof packaging, typically 25kg kraft paper bags with an inner PE plastic liner. For sea freight, request desiccant bags inside the container and ensure the container is inspected for holes or leaks before loading to prevent 'container rain' damage.

DME pricing is heavily influenced by global barley commodity prices. It is wise to negotiate long-term supply contracts to hedge against price volatility. Ask for tiered pricing based on volume; for example, a full container load (FCL) should yield a 10-15% discount compared to Less than Container Load (LCL) orders. Always clarify the Incoterms, as FOB (Free On Board) is standard, but CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) may be more convenient for first-time buyers.

To secure your investment, use Trade Assurance services provided by platforms like Made-in-China.com. For large transactions, consider a Letter of Credit (L/C) or a 30% deposit / 70% balance against Bill of Lading (B/L) payment structure. Never wire full payment upfront to a new supplier. Additionally, hire a third-party inspection firm (like SGS or Intertek) to perform a pre-shipment inspection to verify the quantity and packaging integrity.

Upon arrival, DME must be stored in a cool, dry warehouse (temperature <20°C, humidity <50%). If shipping to tropical regions, refrigerated containers (Reefers) are recommended but will increase shipping costs significantly. Ensure your customs broker has the Phytosanitary Certificate and Health Certificate ready in advance to avoid port delays, which can lead to expensive demurrage charges.
