When evaluating sneakers, prioritize upper materials such as breathable fly-knit, synthetic leather, or genuine suede depending on the target market. The outsole should ideally be made of MD (Phylon), RB (Rubber), or TPU to ensure a balance between cushioning, slip resistance, and wear resistance. For performance footwear, verify the insole density (typically EVA or Ortholite) to guarantee long-term comfort and arch support.

For the US market, ensure compliance with CPSIA (especially for children's footwear) regarding lead and phthalate content. For the EU, products must adhere to REACH regulations to ensure no harmful chemicals are present in the dyes or glues. Additionally, look for suppliers with BSCI or Sedex audits, which demonstrate ethical manufacturing practices and social responsibility, a key requirement for modern B2B procurement.

Request a pre-production sample and subject it to flex testing (minimum 30,000 flexes without cracking) and abrasion resistance tests for the outsole. Check the bonding strength between the upper and the sole using a pull-test to prevent delamination. It is highly recommended to source from suppliers on Made-in-China.com who offer third-party inspection services to verify that mass production matches the approved sample.

Look for suppliers capable of private labeling, including custom logo printing, embossed branding on the tongue, and customized shoebox packaging. Advanced suppliers offer low MOQ for custom colorways and can provide 3D design mockups before physical sampling. Ensure the supplier can handle SKU complexity, such as offering a full range of sizes (EU 36-46) within the same design.

The footwear industry is high-risk for trademark infringement. Avoid products that closely mimic patented designs or logos of major global brands. When creating your own designs, ensure your supplier signs an IP Protection Agreement. Always verify that the supplier has the right to export the specific designs they are displaying to avoid customs seizures.

Negotiate based on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Ask for tiered pricing (e.g., discounts at 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units). For long-term partnerships, negotiate payment terms such as a 30% deposit and 70% balance against the Bill of Lading (B/L). Using Secured Trading services on platforms like Made-in-China.com can protect your payment until the goods are shipped.

Sneakers are high-volume but relatively low-weight. For large orders, Sea Freight (FCL or LCL) is the most economical. To reduce costs, consider shipping without boxes (polybag packaging) to increase the number of pairs per container by up to 40%. If boxes are required, request flat-packed boxes to save space. For urgent restocks, Air Freight is viable but will significantly impact your margins.

Establish a Quality Assurance Agreement before payment that defines the 'Acceptable Quality Level' (AQL 2.5/4.0). If defects are found, provide photographic and video evidence immediately. It is much safer to hire a pre-shipment inspection service in China to catch issues before the goods leave the factory, as international returns are often prohibitively expensive due to duties and freight.
