Japanese sword manufacturers

The choice of steel determines the blade's durability and edge retention. For decorative purposes, Stainless Steel is sufficient as it is rust-resistant but brittle. For functional or practice swords (Iaito/Shinken), prioritize High Carbon Steel (1060, 1095) or T10 Tool Steel, which offer superior hardness and flexibility. Folded Steel (Damascus style) provides a traditional aesthetic with visible grain patterns (Hada), while Clay-Tempered blades create a genuine Hamon (temper line), indicating a hard edge and a resilient spine.

A high-quality Japanese sword must have a secure fit among its parts. Ensure the Tsuka (handle) is wrapped in genuine rayskin (Samegawa) and tightly bound with Ito (braid). The Tang (Nakago) should ideally be Full Tang and secured by two bamboo pegs (Mekugi) for safety during use. Check that the Tsuba (guard), Fuchi, and Kashira are made of durable alloys like brass, iron, or copper rather than cheap zinc alloys if intended for heavy use.

Since these are edged weapons, compliance is critical. Ensure the supplier provides Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any oils used and confirms the blade's Rockwell Hardness (HRC)—typically 55-60 HRC for functional blades. For international trade, verify that the products are classified under HS Code 930700 (Swords, cutlasses, bayonets, lances, and similar arms). Always confirm if the blades are shipped blunt (unsharpened) or sharp, as this affects customs clearance in many jurisdictions.

Authentic appearance relies on the Hamon. A real Hamon is created through differential clay tempering, whereas cheap imitations use acid etching or sandblasting. Request high-definition videos of the blade under light to see the Nie and Nioi (crystalline structures). For high-end B2B orders, ask for forging certificates or documentation proving the smith's experience and the origin of the materials.

The most significant risk is Customs Seizure. Many countries have strict regulations on blade length, gravity-opening mechanisms, or double-edged designs. You must verify the legality of 'Katana' imports in your destination country. For example, the UK has specific bans on curved blades over 50cm unless they are traditionally handmade. Always require the supplier to provide a detailed commercial invoice stating the item is for 'Display' or 'Martial Arts Training' to facilitate clearance.

Swords are prone to rust and physical damage. Ensure the supplier applies a thick layer of anti-rust oil (Choji oil) and wraps the blade in plastic film before inserting it into the Saya (scabbard). The outer packaging should be a double-walled corrugated box with foam inserts to prevent movement. For bulk orders, wooden crates are recommended to prevent the boxes from bending or snapping during sea freight.

Focus on MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) for customization. Most professional forges on Made-in-China.com allow for custom Tsuba designs or blade engravings if you meet a certain volume. Negotiate based on Tiered Pricing—the cost difference between 1045 carbon steel and T10 steel is significant, so ensure the price reflects the specific steel grade and heat treatment process promised.

Use Secure Payment terms and prioritize suppliers on Made-in-China.com who have undergone Audited Supplier status. Request a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) to verify that the balance point (Motohaba/Sakihaba) and weight of the swords match your specifications. This prevents receiving 'wall-hangers' when you paid for functional martial arts equipment.
