Marathon medal manufacturers

Most professional marathon medals are made from Zinc Alloy, Brass, or Iron. Zinc Alloy is the most popular choice for 3D designs because of its fluidity in injection molding, allowing for intricate details and cut-outs. The manufacturing process typically involves Die Casting (for zinc alloy) or Die Striking (for brass/iron), followed by polishing, plating (gold, silver, bronze, or antique finishes), and color filling using Soft Enamel, Hard Enamel, or UV Printing for gradients.

B2B buyers must ensure that the medals and their ribbons comply with REACH (EU) or CPSIA (US) regulations, particularly regarding lead and nickel content in the metal and AZO-free dyes in the polyester or nylon ribbons. Always request SGS or Intertek test reports from the supplier to verify that the electroplating materials are non-toxic and eco-friendly.

The ribbon is as important as the medal itself. Specify the width (typically 25mm to 38mm), material (sublimated polyester for full-color designs or woven silk), and the attachment method (V-sewn, H-sewn, or jump ring). For high-end events, ensure the ribbon has a high-density weave to prevent fraying and uses heat-transfer printing for vibrant, fade-resistant logos.

Focus on color matching (Pantone C system) to ensure brand consistency. Check for plating uniformity (no pitting or bubbles) and enamel overflow. For 3D medals, inspect the depth of the relief and the smoothness of the edges. A critical QC step is the weight consistency; professional marathon medals usually weigh between 60g to 150g depending on size and thickness.

Marathon dates are fixed, so timing is critical. The standard production cycle is 15-20 days, plus 7-10 days for air freight or 30-40 days for sea freight. You should start the sourcing process at least 3 months in advance. Always build in a 14-day buffer for customs clearance or potential production delays to ensure the medals arrive before the race kit pickup.

Ensure you have the legal right to use the logos and trademarks provided to the supplier. Conversely, protect your own design by signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). When sourcing via Made-in-China.com, prioritize Audited Suppliers who have a proven track record of respecting IP rights and producing original custom designs for international marathons.

For large orders, negotiate a 30% deposit and 70% balance payment after passing a pre-shipment inspection. Use Trade Assurance services to protect your payment. To reduce costs, ask for mold fee waivers on high-volume orders (usually 1,000+ pieces) and request consolidated shipping if you are ordering other race supplies like bibs or t-shirts from the same region.

Medals are heavy and high-density cargo. For quantities over 500 pieces, Sea Freight (LCL) or Rail Freight (for Europe) is significantly more cost-effective than air express. However, if the deadline is tight, Air Freight is necessary. Ensure the supplier uses double-walled corrugated export cartons and individual polybags for each medal to prevent scratching during transit.
